Someone gave me this lovely tree last year, and I love it. But I have a terrible problem with leaf spots. They're quite pervasive, and last year the leaves turned black and fell off early in the fall. The plant life beneath also aquired a black mold. I picked up as much of the fallen leaves as possible. This is happening again this year, and I have been spraying it with a chemical, it seems better, but why is this happening? Last summer was quite dry here in the Buffalo NY area, but this summer is hot and wetter. Any clues out there? It has not begun to bloom yet-I can't wait for that!

    Hi Gail,

While leaf spot is not pleasant to look at, there is little that warrants its control. It is caused by a fungus. The best method of control is raking fallen leaves, as you have done. Here is a link which describes additional methods. If at all possible avoid the use of chemicals by choosing an alternative method of control and increasing your tolerance of its appearance.
