I have a small catalpa tree in my front yard providing the only much needed shade in a south facing new mexico yard. We just moved in to this house and were impressed with the flowers this spring. There are a few other catalpas on this street and they all look healthy. We've had a sewer line problem with roots invading it. We also have an arbor vitae that we thought was the culprit. A neighbor recommended this salt that you flush down the toilet once a month to keep the roots out of the old ceramic sewer line. The sewer line seems to be doing better, but now the catalpa is loosing leaves and none of the others on the street are. I'm not sure if I should spend the $2000 on a new sewer line or watch the tree die and possibly replace it. Perhaps there's another option to the salt in the line. Any advice?
how about a video camera inspection of the pipes? that would show you if there are any roots growing there and possibly you could ID the plant they come from. Course of action to be determined afterwards.
