A friend gave me 5 cuttings that have taken root - they are planted in small cups and are all bearing leaves, my question is what should I do with them now? I plan on growing them in containers so I can bring them in my garage in the winter - I live in the Northeast in zone 6 and we get a lot of snow and cold. When should I plant them in the containers? Should I keep them in my garage now? A lot of questions, I know, but this is my first time growing figs and I so want these plants to thrive. Thanks!
You want to make sure that the root system is well-developed before you move them; if you destroy the small and sensitive roots, they're done. So it's best to leave them outside or in a warm place, but not in too much sun. Make sure the soil is constantly moist, and maybe mist them a couple of times a day. At the end of the season, perhaps in September, it should be safe to transplant them, but still be extremely careful not to disturb the roots. Put them inside your garage before the first frost and Bob should be your uncle. I hope this helps - I'm sure others have better advice, but this is what has worked for me.
Thank you! I will do that - they are in my garage now, so I will leave them there and make sure they stay moist and won't worry about transplanting them till later in the season. Thanks again for the advice
They need to spend the rest of Summer in a partly shady area. Your garage is too dark unless it's set up as a Sunroom.
My garage has 2 large window and gets lots of sun, I have them on a table near the windows so they are not in direct sunlight, but not in total shade either - is that good?
