Fertilizer spikes are a waste of money. Buy granular fertilizer instead.

Oh really? How do you get the granular fertilizer down to the roots? dig little holes and fill them with fertilizer? or sprinkle on surface and let the watering do the work?
I'm a tree care newbie so sorry about the basic questions. I have a new home with about 15 trees of various types and sizes. Just want to make sure they do well under my care.

It washes in. Most roots are near the surface, where the air is. Tree spikes are granular fertilizer compacted into a spike. Costs more, does less. You want to broadcast fertilizer over the ground above the widespread shallow network of feeder roots, not insert it in dense columns that do not correspond to the distribution of the roots.

First thing to check is whether they need any fertiliser at all - trees in general don't have high nutrient demands (compared to e.g. food crop plants), and too much fertiliser can actually harm them. Best to get a soil test done, to see whether there are any particular nutrient deficiencies. Depending on the results, you may need add nothing at all (commonest!) or only need to add one or two nutrients, not a mixed fertiliser.
