I've been pruning the fruit trees at my new house the last couple of days. The plum trees appear not to have been done for several years and many of the cuttings are 2-3" across, upwards of 6' tall and very straight vertically.

Would it be possible to root these cuttings? If so how? Just set them in a bucket of water?

Are plums like apples where the root stock and fruit stock are different? IE: would the cuttings make good trees?

I've also got a pear tree that produces softball size fruit. Could cuttings from this tree be rooted? The part being removed aren't nearly as large.

Whips from current season's growth of plums may be rooted by inserting them into the ground in early fall.

Rooting hormone applied to the tips won't hurt your chances, either.
