This is a poplar tree. There are many kinds grown, including a range of hybrids selected for various purposes.

Cottonwood and poplars are both Populus sp. Most grow fast and large, may break up suddenly in summer and have extensive root systems. Not really very good near dwellings.

Poplars grow like nobody's business in my own experience. Do not plant anywhere near foundations or sidewalks and be careful not to plant where it will easily access sewer pipes and plumbing. They go for it in a BIG way! Good luck.
