When I was a little boy my grandmother had one of these trees growing near her home in middle Tennessee (USA). I believe it was a native species but I have never seen another like it anywhere else. I would love to know more about it. This is the only photo I've been able to find of one.

Looks like Kalmia, a shrub vs tree most times. AKA Mountain Laurel.

You can also find this treasured garden shrub in Portland gardens and nurseries. Briggs nursery in western WA grows great quantities of it.

Several that I've seen planted in our area, were grouped with other plants, or located in narrow beds, so that quite a bit needed to be pruned for a fit.

I think those look their best if they can be placed so that the canopy can remain fairly complete for volume for at least 15 years - with some thinning.

Probably in a bed wider as 6' to 8'. But not a 3' to 5' bed next to a home.

Dwarf cultivars are on the local market.
