Gunnera and Burdock both come to mind. Did you see flowers?

Petasites frigidus -- to confirm, you'll have to look at a number of photographs online as the leaf shape and margin are quite variable. The Flora of the Pacific Northwest mentions two varieties, var. nivalis and var. palmatus (meaning that there is also a var. frigidus) and much of the obvious difference between the varieties is leaf shape.

Flowers appear before the leaves in late winter.

Petasites frigidus is what it was. It took a little looking into but my teacher said that it is probably juvenile. Thanks.
