All, This is probably ridiculously easy for folks here, but someone gave us a floor plant (see attachment) that doesn't seem to have passed it's first few weeks with us too happily. :( It's maybe 2 feet high, two feet across. See the attachment for a photo of a leaf. Any help with a name and care info would be much appreciated! -- Bob
this might be your plant ... http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/PhiXan.htm a Philodendron Xanadu Marn
Many thanks to both of you - whichever of the two varieties it is, I gather that the Mideast full sun was a bit too much for it, even in December. I've moved it indoors and hopefully it'll be happier now! :)
Does indeed appear to be Philodendron xanadu Croat, Mayo & J. Boos. This species is from Australia and was until recently considered to be a hybrid. It is not "Philodendron selloum" since "Philodendron selloum" is not a species but a common name for Philodendron bipinnatifidum Schott ex Endl. P. bipinnatifidum has a substantially larger blade. Here's a link for a little more information on the species: http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Philodendron%20'xanadu'%20pc.html
Quite a bit of recent information has come to light regarding the species Philodendron xanadu. My friends Julius Boos and Dr. Tom Croat of the Missouri Botanical Garden joined with botanist Dr. Simon Mayo to describe the species in 2002. The species was first published in the International Aroid Society journal Aroideana. Julius has just helped me rewrite my entire page on the species. I indicated in an earlier post this species is from Australia. According to the botanists who did the study on the species, this is incorrect. I'm not sure where that informaion originated but the genus Philodendron is not found outside Mexico, Central America, South America and the West Indies. Current speculation is someone imported seeds from this Meconostigma into Australia and released it at one or more spots. It is not wide spread in Australia. Current scientific studies indicate it is from Brazil. All the information now posted is correct and disputes quite a bit of information that can be found on the internet.
