Location: Chemainus, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada Again, our compost pile has produced another plant. Last year nothing, this year after turning pile this plant appeared and is very healthy and over 3 feet tall. Sheath shows overlapping margins, collar seems to be ciliate. Cross section of stem appears to more like a reed. Perhaps it is not a grass ?
I think so. I suggest that this is large barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli; in the "Illustrated Flora of British Columbia" it is called Echinochloa crusgalli).
Thanks Robert !..........It certainly agrees with the pictures I have pulled up on Echinochloa crusgalli. The leaves and stalk are identical. The seeds however, hang differently from the pictures I find i.e. the pictures on the internet show a more horizontal projection from the stem. Perhaps this is just a regional variation. Any thoughts ??
OK Robert.........I have viewed several dozen more photos and read several articles. You are very correct and I am a tiny bit smarter ! Thank You so much !
