In North East New England - I have 2 old trees near the house that I think are maples. The posted leaf was the only available sample today, hopefully from one of these trees. There is a hard top driveway right up to one side of the trees that was put in within the past 10 years. There is also a well dug within the area of the root system. The trees seem very stressed and may be dying although they have a good leaf cover during the summer. The trees shed small branches from time to time which are dead wood that can crumble when moved. This winter a 4" branch came down vertically and went completely through the porch roof. Now I'm concerned that if they lose a major section the house roof is in danger. Before calling in a local tree company I was wondering if trees like this can be partially cut back at the upper levels with a hope of new growth?
Probably Sugar Maple, though not 100% sure (in case the leaf blew in from elsewhere!). Impossible to make a reliable safety statement without an inspection in person - contact an ISA-registered arborist for an independent health & safety report (NOT just someone who will give you a statement based on the work needs of their workforce!).
