Appreciation: Can thalli merge?

    Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum but was mostly looking for a quick answer to something I came across in the field - two very different, conspicuous species of foliose lichen that had joined thalli, with some odd mixing and matching in the resulting lobes. Is this common? One species is a cyanolichen (dark thallus) and I wasn't sure if it was just a case of an unhealthy specimen looking similar to the other species. I would appreciate some clarification on this.

    Hi Jessibee,

    Interesting question, I'd be interested to hear the answer.
    Without seeing a photo, my shot in the dark would be that yes one individual was drier or degraded. If you do have a photo please feel welcome to post it!
