We found this growing in a long narrow tub about 6 inches deep. We did have some plants growing there but they finished their cycle then this one appeared. We thought it looked cute so we took it out and repotted it but we have no idea what it is except my wife thinks it may be some kind of fungus.
Hi, Here's the same liverwort taken in my cold greenhouse last May 29/09 except the little plates are open. I thought it was cute too. Not sure what it says about the soil in the greenhouse - acid?
It looks cool. I have been looking and looking for some of these and have had no luck. But when I dont have a pot or anything with me I find some. liverworts have tiny, cup-shaped, blue, pink, or white flowers in spring. Three-lobed, mottled, mid-green leaves appear after the blooms. Care: Grow in moist but well-drained, rich, neutral to alkaline soil. Thrives in heavy soil.
Thanks for the info about the soil. I think this might be a green tongue wort - Marchantia polymorpha according to my Plants of the Southern Interior or British Columbia. A native apparently though. I thought it might have ridden in on a potted plant. Says male and female sex organs on different plants. I think mine is a male and the Kiwi is a female. Not sure but an interesting plant. Then there is the spicy conehead which looks like a pebbled green tongue...
