I just found this plant growing in the woods behind my house on Long Island. I have absolutley no idea what it is, or how to care for it. The "flowers" appear to be seed pods. Can someone ID this plant for me?
    Thanks.

Cypripedium acaule. Native orchids such as this may not take well to garden conditions most of the time and should be left where they are found by non-specialists, unless in danger of being destroyed anyway by development or other threats.

Thanks for the information; I'm surpised these survive in NY's cold winters. My wife grows other orchids; perhaps she'll adopt these, if not, back to the woods.

Many thousands of species found all over the world, including beneath the desert sands of Australia and in the far North.
