Why brown lines appear on the Asplenium nidus leaves? What I should or shouldn't to do? many thanks Ivanil
Congratulations - you are going to have babies!! The lines (close to the midrib and extending out about halfway to the edge) are called "sori" and contain many sporangia which produce the minute spores by which ferns reproduce. The problem if you have this in the house is the fern will drop the spores and you will have brown dust around the fern. The spores might also cause an allergic reaction if breathed in by sensitive people. You can collect the spores and sow them to produce new plants - this is interesting to do, but takes a long time and some skill. The fronds that are producing the sori are the oldest ones and will age and die after releasing the spores. If you do not want the dust problem etc they could be cut off now. Brian
muito obrigada, Brian Hi Brian, Thank you very much fo your instruction. I thought the brown lines was because I overwater it. I don't care if the babies make a mess.... I would like to collect them and reproduce. That will be a good experience. I had few of those plants in BRazil, but now that is the first one I bought. anyway, many thanks for your information. all my best Ivanil
