I moved into this house last year, and this maple in the backyard has had issues since then. I think the developers screwed up,covering the tree's bottom with too much fill, thus choking it. Is there anything I can do here? I have seen neighboors, with similar issues, digging around the tree? Here are some pictures. Thank you in adavnce!

It's unlikely to recover & it's too late for intervention (damage is done). Should it recover, it will be MANY YEARS before it looks heathly again.

First I looked at the small piece missing from the trunk, which did not seem like a big deal.

But one look at the photo of the top was all it took to know that I wouldn't even think twice about trying to save it.

At least you don't have to deal with removing something with a 30" diameter trunk.
