I have a 20 yrs old Shirofugen cherry that is growing too close to the roof and I need to remove a couple of large limbs so can I do this now safely or wait until the winter? I have cut it back before in the same place and new growth is looking weak.

Good evening and welcome to the forum, yes you can prune it now.

Do these trees bloom NEXT yr (2022) on this yr (2021) growth?

I know about pruning Okanagan orchard farm trees

But not about ornamental blossom trees
This article contains an interesting quote - to the effect ...

Prune to reveal beauty - not trying to make it beautiful

Then again @Willard found the curious flagpole cherry (turned in to a candelabra / chandelier)

Sometimes I think one has to say good bye to a misplaced plant

And offer the wood to a lathe artist -

Maybe a woodworker can make something practical out if it to honor any sentimental attachments

Thank you! So it would not be more vulnerable to disease and bleeding now?

Hi Peter, no it will be fine now, I always prune mine ( if needed ) between now and August, otherwise they are prone to silver leaf disease. June/July is the perfect time.
