I live in Meridian Idaho near Boise. Early this morning I walked outside and found this clump on the edge of the lawn. I would swear they weren't there yesterday. They were still carrying the soil they'd pushed through. Could someone identify them for me? I looked at various mushroom identification sites but nothing stood out to me.
This is a classic clump of the conspicuous Coprinus (or Coprionopsis). You'll find a visual match to yours if you Google Coprinellus micaceus (although it could just as easily be C. truncorum).
