I live in NW INdiana and I found this tree on the edge of my property by a lake. I have searched the area to see if there are any more and couldn't find any. It has a pale lilac colored flower that is bell shaped and such a thorny seed pod. The tree stands about 3 ft tall. Sure would like to know what it is.

Thanks so much for your info. It looks so pretty to be a weed. I picked one of the seed pods. Is it only poisonous if ingested?

Annual plant rather than a tree. Many ask about it on the internet, should be multiple other posts form other looking for an identification on this site alone (try searching site, if inerested in additional photos and discussion).
