This shrub has been growing for approx 2-3 years. It is in an out-of-the way part of my back yard, so I just left it alone to see what would develop. I never saw it bloom before today. It is approx 3-3 1/2 ft tall has smooth stalks and occasional thorns, which show in one of the two pictures I am including. The flowers opened today, are approximately the size of a half dollar and have no discernible fragrance. Any assistance the forum members can give me in identifying this would be wonderful. I am especially concerned about toxicity to dogs as I am bringing a new puppy home in just over a month. [/ATTACH] Thanks so much! Merri-Lee Eastern PA
Chaenomeles Flowering Quince http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/potd/2007/03/chaenomeles_japonica.php Not aware of any danger to pets. Fruits are edible.
Thank you so much. Now that you say the name, that is of course what this is. We knew we would know it as soon as someone named it for us. We know it more as Japonica, but definitely the same thing. Very gratefully yours, Merri-Lee
