I discovered this plant behind my house. It resembles a squash/melon with a prickly stem and fruit approximately the size of ping pong balls. They start out with coloration like miniature watermelons and turn a light orange when ripe. The meat inside is white and smells somewhat like cucumbers, but slightly sweeter, and lots of seeds. I've seen these in a few areas around Louisiana and have always wondered what they were.
sorta looks like vine peach/ Cucumis melo you'res looks healthier than mine did i did get a few fruits from it and it was different some say it taste like mangoe or peach but not real sure how to describe it to me it tasted more like cucumber with a bit of melon canteloup taste i liked it but did not do very well in my part. none of the seeds sprouted from the fruit for me either. they where free so not gonna complain at all. if they grew better for me i would probably grow some more
I did a search on vine peach and came up with pictures that looked just like the one I cut in half, however, the sizes discussed all seem to be larger than the fruits I picked. None of the articles mention if this is a wild variety, however, every instance I seen of this plant including the one behind my house which I photographed have all been wild.
Here is another picture showing the inside and also a size relationship, as I said most mentions of it stated a larger size than my specimen.
mine where bout the same size as the ones you had one of ya neibors prob planted them a bird or squerel deposited the seeds for you from a fruti they stole and allot of catalouges boost the size and quiality of there fruit but it may vary on where they are grown time of year and all that
