I found these on the ground while out on my last hike. I'd like to know what they are, sorry no pictures of the tree as I wasn't sure which one it was, just two pics one with flash and one without. Thank you for your help.
They do have a fruit-like look about them. Some kinda wild pear, maybe? If you can, go back to where you found them and collect some leaves from likely parents. I understand that you are unsure of the exact tree these fell from, but the sharp folks in this forum will be able to put leaves and fruit together (bark too, if there's any fallen) to give you an identification.
I won't get the chance till next weekend...I'll go back and take pics of leaves and of all the trees in a 360 degree circle around the seeds/fruit and see if that helps. If it is of any help they were found behind the dark tree in the foreground of the first pic, directly on the other side of the large stone in the second (same stone in both pics).
Looks like Carya glabra.Common name pignut. See.... http://images.google.com/imgres?img...microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA&sa=G See left side, second row. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA&sa=N
It sure does look like it, and I remember seeing that leaf pattern in the area at the begining of Autumn. Also, that may be a smooth bark hickory tree in the picture behind the stone, that's where the seeds/nuts were found.
