can anybody identify this plant

    given to me as a small plant , I believe they grow quite large with a bulbous bottom end

    Looks like a Yucca to me. Maybe Y. elephantipes, if you've seen the same one growing with a bulbous foot.

    thanks for that after looking at different plants I think it is Yucca gloriosa

    It really does look like a yucca, and Y. gloriosa has been a garden favorite for a long time--I think it was introduced to England around 1560!

    A bulbous bottom means you should check ponytail palm, Beacarnea recurvata or Nolina recurvata. Nolina is pretty big genus of "woody lilies" ranging from Florida and Georgia through Mexico and maybe beyond.
