Today I was out for a little stroll around my neighborhood and saw a shrub that I liked. My neighbor doesn't know what it is called. He told me I could take a piece to see if it would root for me. I took a pic of the piece that I brought home and stuck it in some water. My neighbor told me that pieces fall off and grow wherever they land on the ground. They seem to spread quite easily. Anyway, the entire bush is very graceful and has an abundance of beautiful red berries. The leaves are very tiny and have have turned red with the season. The leaves appear much larger in the photo. Any ideas please? Much appreciated ~ Lily
Himalayan cotoneaster (Cotoneaster simonsii). Grown in Seattle for over 100 years and naturalized there for decades. Many specimens seen are bird-sown rather than planted by humans. In fact, so many species of cotoneasters have been recognized as growing without assistance in the Seattle area that continued planting of the genus in the local region may be becoming questionable.
