Wow, nothing here for incense cedar. I never think I can recognize these without the cones, but I'm pretty sure this tree in Stanley Park is one. I know, I should be able to tell by the smell of the bark, but I'm not sure I know what trees that aren't incense cedars smell like. Here are photos from a a tree in a friend's yard from ten years ago. And photos from Tisdall Park in Vancouver taken eight years ago. I took these photos in 2012, of a tree in BC Heritage Trust loose-leaf book from 1982 of heritage trees in Vancouver. The text said "This tree may well be the largest incense cedar in Vancouver. It is located at 4687 Marguerite Street."
Yep, Incense-cedar it is - when there's no cones, you can still tell by the leaf arrangement, as the lateral and facial leaves appear to be in whorls of four, rather than staggered pairs as they are in e.g. Western Redcedar or Lawson's Cypress. For clarification I say 'appear to be', as they are in staggered pairs in Incense-cedar too, but the staggering is unequal, so they look as if they are in whorls of 4 to casual inspection.
