The past winter has ravaged my California Lilac, which had become too high and leggy in the past two years. Would anybody have suggestions for a replacement? It is in a southern planter and receives full sun, plus heat from the sun's reflection on the window. I am looking for a hardy, flowering, easily-maintained evergreen that won't grow too high and block my view. All suggestions greatly appreciated, including tips for keeping the shrub-to-be healthy. Daphne was one of my ideas. Thanks very much!

Daphne isn't a bad idea. What about Gaultheria mucronata? Flowers are a bit on the small side, but it makes up for it with colourful fruit.

Daphnes are prone to root rot, have other characteristic limitations. Maybe try one of the English lavender types of lavenders.
