I live on Vancouver where our spring weather can be a little wet. I like to move my cactus colection out side when the weather warms, and are going to build a shelter for them to keep the rain off. I have been looking at clear plastic corrugated roofing material and was wondering if the slight blue hue to the plastic would have any affect on tha cactus? They make a absolute clear type but at twice the price.
I'd think if these are tender species that spend most of the year in the house you wouldn't move them out until the dry weather of summer anyway. While it is warm cacti don't mind a little moisture, in fact the species from Arizona etc. get most of their water during summer.
Chiming in from wet west Michigan. As long as you are using a quick draining mix in your containers, you should be fine. All of my cacti and other succulents are outdoors by the end of May and will stay out until October. Outdoor plants get much better air circulation, so even if you have a few days of driving rain, the container plants dry out pretty quick. Historically, I've never had a root rot problem while the plants were outdoors,...if it happens at all, it has occured when I brought them indoors.
I have my cacti and jades outside already. I have them in clay pots and the soil is 2/3commercial cactus soil and 1/3 perlite. The jades at least are loving it and growing well with great colour.
