I live in Montana, and there is type of cactus living in the field next to my home, and I don't know what it is. It is similar to Simpson's Hedgehog Cactus, as in the fact that is a ground-hugger and has a bulbous, dome shape, but the spines are smaller, the whole plant is larger, and has purple flowers when blooming. After pollination, a liquidy, edible fruit grows that is filled with the seeds.

Is this what is called Escobaria vivipara at USDA site?
All Coryphantha do not go that far north.

USDA PLANTS database typically lags behind the USDA GRIN Taxonomy for Plants site, which uses Coryphantha vivipara, with them reviewing the nomenclature relatively recently: "Name verified on: 16-Jun-2008 by ARS Systematic Botanists. Last updated: 19-Jun-2009"
