While out on a trek in the Prescott National Forest, Arizona (7500 ft. approx.), I came across something I thought rather unusual, cactus growing in a tree trunk. I had to take a picture. Could someone identify the cactus. And, is this unusual? Thank You for your response.
Likely an Echinocereus, but the photograph is too small to be certain. As for how common the phenomenon is, I'd say it's likely fairly rare, but it is well within the realm of being possible as evidenced by your image. Neat find!
Tropical cloud forest cacti are epiphytic. A cactus potting mix I used to buy was mostly tree bark. What cactus seedlings need is a moist, shady place to get started.
