This spring, the owners of some of B.C.’s biggest hazelnut farms levelled their orchards because their trees were infected with eastern filbert blight and no longer producing nuts. It was a huge blow to an industry that has been in B.C. since the 1930s, but declining since the blight arrived on commercial farms in the eastern Fraser Valley five years ago. There is hope, though, in the form of blight-resistant trees developed in Oregon.
