Hi, I am new to this forum and hope to participate in other threads soon. For now though, I need some help. I am currently taking an online Plant Identification course through the University of Guelph. I am doing some research on Butchart Gardens on its history as it relates to taxonomy and nomenclature. Question: So, did/does UBC store taxonomic material for Butchart Gardens? If so, how it is prepared and how it is organized?
Butchart is a display garden -- I'm not aware of any taxonomic / nomenclature work being done there, or ever in the past. The UBC Herbarium has a searchable database, and even though the vascular plant data has not yet been completely entered, a search for Victoria in the location field yields over 1200 results, while a search for Butchart in the location field yields 0. So, it is a pretty safe assumption that none of the material at Butchart would ever have been deposited at UBC. But, to be sure, contact Linda Jennings (email address on this page) The Royal BC Museum would be another possibility, but given that the material at Butchart would be of cultivated origin, I doubt that they would store it either. There are only a few herbaria in the world that make an effort to collect and catalogue cultivated material, and none that I know of in Canada.
