Does anyone know what this plant is? Someone gave it to my parents, who passed it on to me. It has been growing nicely in south facing window & requires little water (appears to be a succulent). It is a bulb which reproduces by budding off little bulbs. It has long fleshy leaves which hang down. It surprised me with a small white flower recently appearing like a tiny stalk of wheat.
Ornithogalum longibracteatum (formerly known as Ornithogalum caudatum) Its commonly called the "Pregnant Onion" but its not related to true onions nor does it have an onion odor. Actually, its an evergreen epigeal (above ground) bulb. Water it thoroughly once a week but don't let the plant stand in water.
Mine seems to really like the heat, producing 4 or more bulbils at a time in the summer and all the bulbils producing their own leaves. The plants just sulk over winter here (inside and under lights, but not a warm room). Congrads on the flower...maybe next year from mine.
Thank you very much! I'm guessing it's not a common houseplant. I wonder where it came from. It propagates like crazy - I just found one growing in the burro tail next to it. Judy
Its common enough in succulent plant collections. As you found, it can volunteer itself in other pots from detached bulblets.
