I've read quite a bit about cryptomerias in this forum but not much about pruning them - does anyone know if I should prune back my cryptomeria as the needles are browning and snap off easily and I wondered if pruning might help it? And/or does it need repotting in a bigger pot and is this the cause of the problem? It is growing on a South-facing terrace in the middle of Manhattan and is fairly exposed to the wind and the rain and is regularly watered.

    Probably needs to be repotted.

Thank you - ok will do, but do you think I should also prune it back to encourage new growth?

No, don't cut the top - it will spoil the shape of this conical evergreen conifer and discourage new growth rather than encourage it. Like us your tree is an organism, an integrated system. Cutting part of it away does not encourage it to do better.
