My daughter received this bromeliad as a gift. Can anyone tell me which variety it is? I have several urn plants and it is definitely not that. I was thinking it might be Vriesea carinata?
Vriesea carinata is a reasonable guess, but the plant is no doubt a horticultural hybrid, and likely a complex one. It looks like an excellent variety for the big hothouse growers here in Florida or in the Netherlands. Thanks partly to the plant breeders, the form of the inflorescence isn't a very good guide to figuring out the genus, except of course the plant looks like a Vriesea or possibly Aechmea. I was just at the World Bromeliad Conference in Orlando, and don't recall seeing anything like it, though I need to go through my photos.
