After planting my first JM a couple of weeks ago (Golden Full Moon Maple) I am onto planning for the second one (next spring) (also to go into the ground).

I am looking for a recommendation of a very much dwarf tree (say 3.5 feet to at most 4 feet in height) with the following characteristics:

    • as bright a red as possible for the foliage and holding this colour as far as possible nto the summer
    • proportioned so that it is taller than it is wide i.e. so more upright
    • hold this 'bright' red colour in a good amount of shade

Doing a bit of web searching it seems to me that 'Brandt's Dwarf' satisfies these conditions?

    What do you think?

    Hello,

I paired Acer palmatum 'Shaina' with my Golden Full Moon Maple. I am not sure if it's bright enough, but it does hold its color well in that shaded area of my garden. Here is a picture in spring and summer of the combination (note the summer picture uploaded 1st, spring 2nd). If you decide you like Shaina, be sure you get one that is not upright. The last few years, I am seeing less like my Shaina and more that are very upright and narrow in our market. Not sure why... But the upright version will exceed your 3.5' height requirement.

It's slow growing, but I do keep mine pruned to keep it the size I want in that area of my garden (mine is somewhere between 12-15 years old).

Red Filigree Lace holds its color very well in shade and it's extremely slow growing. My Skeeters broom does very well in shade too, but it is faster growing and will want to exceed your 3.5' space in a short time.

I do not have personal experience with 'Brandt's Dwarf'.

Thanks for the 'Shaina' suggestion and your pictures are so perfect. Congratulations.

(I would love to hear back from an owner of a "Brandt's Dwarf")
