When we moved into our new house a couple years ago there was already some landscaping done. Many of the plants still had some id tag on them, but the boxwood they planted did not. Is there any way to tell the different cultivars apart? I will post a picture if needed.

Compare with labeled stock at nurseries.

I've tried doing that but I don't know what the differences to look for are.

Clip a branch off the one you have and hold it up to ones at the nursery and see if they are the same.

    Hi Petauridae,

Most Japanese boxwood tend to get a bronze tone in winter. Here's more info on the difference between common boxwood aka English boxwood - Buxus sempervirens and Japanese boxwood - Buxus microphylla japonica.

This UK site might help you to narrow it down a bit. Click on 'Foilage Colour' and 'Box Characteristics'.

I agree that your best bet might be to take cuttings to local nurseries where they may have been purchased or contact the previous owner.

Thanks Newt! We are the first owner's so I'd have to contact the guy who did the landscaping. His business is quite big so he probably wouldn't remember. I will do what both you and RonB said about the clipping...

Green Mtn vs. Green Velvet was what I thought they may be (or perhaps Winter Gem).

Petauridae, you are so very welcome. It might be worth contacting the landscaper. Many have a preference for a particular variety of plants. They might just be able to at least narrow it down to just a few if they don't know exactly which one you have. It's worth a try.
