A few of these seedlings are popping up in a shady area near a grove of Arbutus trees on the south shore of Bowen Island. The deer eat almost everything else in the area, so if this is a native species we will plant more! Does anyone know what it is?
It snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) as posted above. It is a native plant found in garry oak ecosystem which the arbutus is also part of. It will spread underground and create a small hedge in a few years. Here is a link were you can find some info on it and other native species. http://www.goert.ca/propagation_guidelines/shrubs/symphoricarpos_albus Two other native shrubs with lots of color are the red flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) a source of nectar for hummingbirds is the red flowering currant and oceanspray(Holodiscus discolor) but the deer might nibble on it a bit.
