    Hi all,

I've had some problems with watering my peppers too much or too little so I'm going to try watering them from the bottom. Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering how much water to put in the tray (1 inch, halfway up?) and how long I should leave the water before I empty it out. Also, is it necessary to have a wicking mat, or can I just put my containers directly in the tray with water.

Thanks for any help and any advice you can share.

Directly in a tray of water sounds like a recipe for overwatering. If you use a wicking mat, you also should match the soil to the highly-increased water volume (needs more air space). Regular top watering (if you don't let it sit in water afterwards) works with a wider variety of soils because you have wet/dry cycles that kill more fungus/bacteria.

Thanks for your response. I had read in another forum that some people were having success from watering their peppers from the bottom so I wanted to try it. The water in the tray gets dumped out, but I just wasn't sure how long to leave it. I guess I'll try about 10 minutes to see how the seedlings do.
