I took this photo mainly out of curiosity. It was in the kitchen garden at Hinton Ampnor in England. It is an improved winter green when other brassicas are unavailable.
@Acerholic It resembles "our" Black cabbage" (Brassica oleracea var. Sabellica 'Nero di Toscana') co-protagonist ingredient with the beans of the classic Tuscan bean soup known as "Ribollita"and that I have always grown in my vegetable garden until I have it made precisely because soup was a dish that I often cooked because it was very "popular" with friends. Moreover, I find the plant so particular and beautiful its dark green color http://www.ciboecibo.it/img/cavolonero.jpg that I also cultivated it combined with a cut of my Rosa Frederic Mistral with which it created a very pleasant contrast.
@Arlette, good morning Arlette, kitchen gardens had a combination of vegetables, fruit and flowers for cutting. This one at Hinton Ampnor is a walled garden with hot houses also for more exotic fruits. Everything is labelled so that people who visit can obtain what they see and grow themselves. Your rose is a lovely companion and a wonderful contrast. Vegetable areas do not have to look dull at all, you have shown that.
@Durgan, good morning, I watch your threads regularly and your photo on this again shows how wonderfully self sufficient you obviously are.
Good morning to you and your wife!!!! I fully agree: vegetable areas do not have to look dull at all The garden for me means yes effort but also color, flavor, growth, experimentation, transformation and .... play! Have a nice Sunday!!!!
@Arlette, what a wonderful bounty Arlette, a very frightening scare crow, Lol. Totally self sufficient as @Durgan is!! Have you watched his series on juicing?
@Acerholic Yes, I follow his series on juices. I, however, go to jams, vegetables in oil and in vinegar and as far as drinks I go on alcohol: liqueurs! At Christmas it is a continuous cycle production !!!!! ! This is also a game and as long as you play you remains young !!!!!
@Arlette, that is amazing Arlette , self sufficiency at it's best !! No supermarkets for you then !!!!
@Acerholic Most of the "production" goes to the home of relatives and friends (some even order lol)! I am also a good customer of the supermarket because I really like to cook a little bit of everything. https://scontent.ffco1-1.fna.fbcdn....=e52b9c5c2ceecfd8eb58653a27837a6d&oe=5F41E64F
@Arlette, now thats a picture of a very busy lady indeed. Big smiles here!! Fresh food for friends and relatives, 'the Italian way', wonderful.
