I just bought bonsai seeds and would like to plant them. So far the intsructions said to soak them in water for 24-48 hours, which I did. Question: I don't have special bonsai soil, can you recommend the soil that I prepare from readily available sand, soil and manure? Also, the instructions said to plant them outside. SHould I plant them outside in a pot? It might take a long time before it germinates.. I've had bonsai once but it died. This time I want to be successful... any suggestions? Maybe it was discussed on this forum already, in that case, I would appreciate a link as I couldn't find it. Thanks!
Firstly, there is not such thing as a "bonsai seed". They are just normal tree seeds, but do you know what kind? In anycase, bonsai from seed is fun (i'm doing it right now), but it take a number of years for the tree to grow to a size that you can start working on it. If you have the ground to plant them in then just plant them in the open ground. They grow fastest there, and in the meantime grab a couple of little trees from agarden centre to work on so that you'll know what to do when your seedlings are ready. How much do you know about training trees? Michael
I don't know much, but I guessed I would learn by the time they germinate :) I would like to know more because you can do amazing things with trees. I bought Thompson & Morgan: Bonsai Trees Mixed. The following species: Pinus elliottii, radiata, halapensis, montezumae, patula, Abies homolepis, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Abies nobilis, Cupressus arozonica, Cypressus macrocarpa, Pinus aristata, Pinus pumula, Pinus radiata, Pinus thumbergii, Picea omorika. Does it ring a bell? To me, they are just bonsai. If I plant them in the beds, will I be able to re-plant them? God knows, what I will want with that place in 5 years... How long does bonsai germinate? A year?
