I have three old blueberry bushes that are about 10 feet tall. The question is-do I trim them slowly over 3-4 years and bring them down to a reasonable height or shall I trim them to 5 feet and hope for the best. And how do I prune them? The trees are, probably, ten years old and give about 10 pounds of fruit but only one of the bushes gives sweet berries.
http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/html/ec/ec1304/ This will answer some of the questions. The blueberries need to be pruned back cut out the older bearing wood and encourage newer wood to come into production. Older wood will generally bear less fruit over a period of years. If you get the bushes down to about 5-6ft that would be pretty good height. This site will help as well http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/90-046.htm Cheers
Thank you for your quick reply. Also, your suggested site was helpful. I will prune first thing next spring. Also, have you tried taking cuttings from these plants? The one bush with sweet fruit would be worth a little effort.
Yes. It's quite simple. This more or less explains waht you need to know. http://berrygrape.oregonstate.edu/blueberry-propagation/ Cheers
We trim our plants back to to about thigh high each year after they bear fruit. We feel it strengthens the bush. We also have a list of other care instructions that may help you. http://www.trueblueplants.com/gardener/plant-care.html
