I have a 35 foot blue spruce in our urban front yard. Over the years, a nearby decidous tree had grown into it and shaded a good part of one side. I had the deciduous cut back, exposing a lot of needleless branches and branches with only a few needles, or needles only on the end of the branch (where sun reached previously). The top of the tree and the leader remain healthy. Will the damaged area grow back and fill in? Or should I just cut it all away? Or let the decidous grow back to cover up? It looks like heck right now. I suspect the neighbours are not happy - but I don't want to cut down such a big tree. This is a neighbour hood with big perfect blue spruces standing alone on lawns. Other info: The brown side goes up more than half the height of the tree. The tree is also on the north side of the house, so he brown side receives sun from the west after noon. The decidous has zero branches below 15 feet now, but is about the same height, meaning that part of the afternoon sun is also obscured although the area around the spruce is open and clear. Advice would be very welcome.
