Hello I'm trying to pick a species of blue spruce to plant. (The colour is going to go great with my house). I live in Kamloops BC. However, I'm having trouble selecting a species. I do not want the mature tree to be any wider than 10 feet. However, I'd like it at least 6' tall and bushy enough at approximately 5' to block out my neighbours annoying night light. I don't care how tall it gets in the end as long as it's not wider than 10'. The tree will not have any other trees surrounding it, only flowers. I need it to look good . It will be planted in a raised planter whose dirt line is level with my neighbours yard as our yards are at different elevations. From my side, the planter is raised approximately 4 feet. I was thinking of Fat Albert, but will it get too wide? Many people in Kamloops plant Montgomery's. I don't think the Fastigata's will grow wide enough as if the tree is too skinny it won't make a nice backdrop for my flower bed in front of the tree (think long planter bed going towards the road with the tree as the backdrop anchor). Hoopsi sounds like it grows too fast and I'll end up with a monster. Any suggestions? Thanks for you time Twila This may not be
Hello Twila, Why not to pick some fir (Abies). For example Abies lasiocarpa arizonica 'Compacta' has all the qualities you looking for, I guess. Look at this picture: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/factsheets/trees-new/cultivars/abies_lasio-compacta.html Ota
Thanks for the suggestion!! I never realized that some of the firs were so blue. I still like the look of the spruce species slightly better. Do you think the fat albert will get too wide? All of the estimates vary so widely!!!! Thanks again. Twila
