Hi, I just unwrapped some Lilium auratum bulbs. All seem a tad soft and have at least one scale covered in blue mold. What is the prognosis for these bulbs? Should I take off the moldy scales, and treat with an antifungal prior to planting (in pots inside to give them extra TLC?)? Advice welcome! Regards, Janet
The softness I don't know about, but the mold shouldn't bother them if it is a moderate amount. I planted mouldy lily bulbs a little over a month ago that are now sprouting, but yours might be in a more advanced state of decay. But if you plant it the bulb will figure out if it has any life left in it and will grow if it does. Ensure good drainage, I'd say.
You are right, and heck, I have nothing to lose by trying. I will pot them up and grow indoors until I see some sprouting. Thanks! Janet
Exactly! But to tell you the truth, I'd keep them outdoors where there is good sun, good air circulation, etc. Mould and rot are more likely to persist at room temperatures. Good luck!
Soft is not a good sign, and it may just be the outer scales. If the inner scales are not affected they'll be fine. I usually just wash the mold off.
The whole bulb looked and felt soft....I would say success is doubtful, but I soaked them overnight in an antifungal solution and potted them up. I will put them outside and we shall see! Meanwhile, I have asked for replacements. Dang. These little beauties are hard to find!
