Hi; Have a blue cedar tree about 15yrs old and noticed a lot of holes bored in trunk and branches of tree. I did a little research and seen where they might be bark beetles. Is ther any hope for this tree?? thanks
Doesn't sound good, if the holes are numerous. Can you post some photos? I'd suspect the tree was already cold-damaged, making it easier for the bark beetles to invade; cedar is only marginally hardy in PA.
Thanks for reply. I don't have a camera. The holes are in bunches of 10-15 and each hole is maybe 1/8" and perfectly round, very exact. They start 4 ft above ground, both on the trunk but more on thick part of branch, near the trunk.
Sapsuckers are a genus of woodpeckers that drill rows of small holes in the bark of trees, and then re-visit the holes to drink sap and eat insects that get attracted to the sap. They do cause a small amount of damage, but nothing like as bad as bark beetles.
I wonder if bark beetles make these perfect round holes on branches and trunk. I don't see anything when I get up close. Other than hiring a tree expert, not sure. Do you think carpenter bee(s) could do this much damage? I noticed one in my wood shed, in the back yard, this tree is in front yard. thanks
