Hello All, Great board...lots of information for those of us who need it :) My question: I live in the Comox Valley and I am wanting to find a source for purchasing some Blue Bamboo. I would also like to be able to grow it myself, however, I am unsure if it would do well in the local climate. Any infromation would be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks for all the great info... Michael
If you are asking about Fargesia nitida that is very cold hardy. Grows wild in high mountains of China with rhododendrons etc. and wants similar moist shady conditions. Leaves often roll up if direct sun strikes them in summer - most definitely a shade plant. This species flowered recently so you want to be sure to buy "new generation seedlings" that are not going to flower within your lifetime.
Thanks Ron B... Do you know if Fargesia nitida actually has a "blue" cane? I have been directed to look into "borinda boliana". I am hoping to find a clumping bamboo(blue cane) that is can handle full sunshine and cold tempertures( I know...a pretty tall order :) Thanks for responding.
Although it varies Borinda spp. tend to be on the tender side. Without indications of a particular clone being hardy enough for your site I would be wary of those. Fargesia nitida is a classic garden plant long grown in Europe, both in the UK and on the mainland. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...itida%22&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&sa=N
