Has anyone had experience using blood meal fertilizer and/or fish emulsion fertilizer? There is also kelp-based fertilizers! I see a wide variety of these organic products derived from animal and ocean sources, and I am wondering which one gives better results to food crops.
Animal based ones attract predators and scavengers like dogs, which lick and dig where it was applied. Garden area must be enclosed in a manner adequate to exclude these. As with all use of fertilizers of any type product with formulation that fits need of specific situation should be selected for best results, including successful employment of funds. The recommended method for identifying suitable formulation is collecting soil samples and sending them out for testing.
Thank you very much! uh! soil testing is definitely not in my plans. I'm into urban farming and have seen lots of these fertilizers in the market. Wholesalers recommend blood meal, but this is what I am afraid of: attracting animals.
I apply blood meal by the 50 pound bag in my veggie garden and orchard and have never had dogs or other animals dig up the ground where I applied it, and I live in bear/coyote/cougar/loose dog country. I once had a bear spill a half used bag that I had in a covered open area, but it didn't appear to eat any and never did come back to it. I also use kelp meal, but it isn't really a fertilizer. It's more of a source of trace minerals and plant vitamins.
