Hey everyone, I hope I can get some clarification on these trees. Please forgive me for the length of this post but I wanted to make sure I got every piece of info in. :) There was an earlier thread on here titled Thorn Trees from 2005 but it was old and I wanted to repost again on them. In that thread there were some photos and links to Black Locust trees and the description of them fits pretty good to my trees but the bark wasn't exactly the same so I'm not sure now if they are Black Locust. If the attachments worked right there should be 3 photos for your assistance. The first photo has a shot of the leaves also. There are other leaves in that shot from a honeysuckle and lilac bush and I'm sorry about the poor quality. I wanted to get a closer shot but my battery was low on my digital so I came in to upload them before it died. The second photo is a closer look at the bark. The third is a photo of the trees in a row and they are about 20-30 feet high. The trees are down below that hill in the photo so forgive me if they look too short. lol. They grow extremely fast and are very hardy as I'm from Pennsylvania. We have water running down over that hill when it rains all the time and in the winter they stand proud. lol. My mother initially hated these and we only had a couple but she cut them down w/out painting them and b4 the year was even over we had 5 or 6 more in the place of 2 we cut down. They were at least 5-6 feet high before the summer was out. We actually love these trees now. If they are indeed Black Locust I've seen a lot of ppl want to get rid of them but we have a troublesome neighbor who likes to cut down bushes just to spite my mother. My mom wants me to find out as much as possible on them so we can either transplant more from the ones we currently have or buy them somewhere. As you can see from the 3rd photo they are great for privacy since they are so close together and are also an excellent shade tree. The birds love them, especially the chickadees and cardinals. So any info on them would be extremely helpful. If you need more photos or a better shot of something let me know and I'll put them on asap. Thanks again!!
I'm actually going to reply to my on post. lol. I kept looking and I found this site. http://ostermiller.org/tree/blacklocust.html I now think I have younglings since the bark is smooth as stated. The only thing that doesn't match now is it doesn't get flowers on it and I'm not sure about the whole "fruit" thing either. We've never paid that much close attention to them. I actually think from other pics on sites that we have a few adult ones higher up in the yard and actually, we had one that was leaning at a 60 degree angle for about 15 years and just fell down about 2 years ago but I remember it being extremely tall and having thorns. Alrighty, I'd still like to hear from everyone on this matter. Thanks!
Thanks Rima, I found a lot more info on them. I went out to check the trees and found that we do indeed have several adult 100 foot Black Locusts along the top of the property. I also remembered that in the spring we were getting a whole lot of little white petals in our pool when the wind blew and they were from said trees. So Black Locusts it is. :)
