Hello, we have a 40+ year birch tree that originally had two graftings made to enable the tree to develop its' shape. Essentially it has the main trunk with 2 other "main" trunks grafted to each side approximately 18" from the base. Each of the three main sections are approximately 15" across, with the centre main one larger. The problem is the top of the centre trunk is dying, despite the other two appearing healthy. There is still active live growth in the bottom 2/3 of the centre trunk. A red-headed woodpecker has found the tree and created 4 or 5 holes at the top of the centre trunk, presumably finding insects upon which to feed. This has occurred in the last week or so. Now that warmer temperatures have arrived (this is Ontario), today I notice a steady dripping of sap from these holes. What should be done to try to preserve this wonderful tree? Thanks for your help. David
