I have a large Linden tree. Most things that I grow any where near it stay very small & some eventually die off. Is a Linden one of those trees that gives off a substance from its roots that prevents other plants from growing around it like the black walnut?

No. It may be just casting too much shade for whatever you have planted there. Is there a Juglans niger near by?

No, just an oak tree. There has been a lot of new growth so I will attempt to prune it out a bit. I didn't want to keep ammending the heavy clay if I was wasting my time. Now that I know for sure I will continue the fight!! Thanks

Heavy clay may be the problem.
